News of the death of Winston-Salem Police Sgt. Mickey Hutchens brought hundreds of people from around the Triad to Yadkin County for a blood drive at Forbush High School, Hutchen's alma mater. What started as the school's annual blood drive became a makeshift memorial for the small, tight-knit community. "Officer Hutchens, I knew him to be a deacon at Forbush Baptist Church," student organizer Chase Edwards said.

The Oak Harbor High School boys' tennis team was tripped up at Stanwood 6-1 Monday. The Wildcats managed just one win, that coming in first singles. Senior Derek Thomas defeated Teague Nelson 6-3, 6-0.  

Oak Harbor's tennis team nearly upset one of Wesco's top teams, but fell just short in a 4-3 loss to Arlington here Friday. The Wildcats captured the first two singles matches. Derek Thomas won 6-3, 6-0 in No. 1 singles, and teammate Josh Evans took No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-2.  

Oak Harbor High School's boys' tennis team defeated Monroe earlier this season, but the Wildcats weren't able to duplicate the feat Monday on the Bearcats' courts. Monroe won the match 5-2, getting revenge for a 4-3 season-opening loss at Oak Harbor Sept. 8. The wins over each other are the only wins this fall for both teams, and they now have 1-8 records for the year.  

Yet, that is a far cry from last season, when Edwards entered the Chase with six wins and ended the year with a series-high nine victories - and lost the championship to Jimmie Johnson by 69 points. Hoping to break a losing streak, the Oak Harbor High School boys' tennis team fell just short at home Wednesday as the Cascade Bruins nipped the Wildcats 4-3. The loss was Oak Harbor's sixth after a season-opening 4-3 win over Arlington. Cascade raised its record to 3-5.  

The Everett tennis team remained undefeated by blanking the Oak Harbor High School boys' squad 7-0 Wednesday on the Seagulls' courts. The Wildcats were able to win only one set during the match with the highly regarded Seagulls. In third singles, Ben Cardinal won the first set 7-5 before falling in the next two 0-6, 0-6.  

Stanwood defeated the Wildcats 5-2 Monday on the Oak Harbor High School tennis courts Monday. Oak Harbor junior Ben Cardinal won the third singles match 6-4, 7-5. Teammate junior David DeGuzman came back to win in fourth singles 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
